Carbon-Based Life

Discovering the Carbon-Fiber Advantage.

Thinking about a carbon fiber bike?

You’re not alone. Carbon rivals steel in terms of strength, and it’s typically lighter, more comfortable and—let’s just say it—cooler. Lots of people want one, and they’re not wrong to feel this way.

For racers, carbon fiber definitely outclasses steel. The material’s lightweight construction and rigidity makes for an efficient cycle, allowing riders to go faster and farther than ever before. In fact, a traditional metal bike hasn’t won the Tour De France since the close of the second millennium (1999 to be exact).

But the carbon fiber advantage isn’t just for racers, cycling enthusiasts and even the casual rider have also seen the benefits of carbon fiber. Riders around the world have gravitated toward the material for reasons varying from increased speed due to aerodynamic efficiency to outright vanity. And while it may come at a cost, for those who demand the best, it’s worth every cent.

Bicycle manufacturers have embraced this shift by both professional and casual riders to carbon fiber with open arms, creating bikes that are just as much a feat of engineering as they are works of art. Limited only by the Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) 15-pound weight limit for race bikes and the depth of their customer’s pockets, the material has moved past simply being an alternative to frames and seat posts, and is now finding a home in components like crank arms, pedals and even wheels.

Your choice ultimately depends on how seriously you take your riding. Those with an extreme appreciation for technology and efficiency will find carbon a must. But even those who only ride casually, will find carbon fiber gives them an extra edge.

So while an aluminum or chromoly bike can take you anywhere a carbon fiber bicycle will, carbon fiber will get there with a lot less effort. You’ll look cooler too.
